Potentially inappropriate prescribing in older adults treated at the Policlinica Medicos sin Fronteras in Huancayo, 2023

Abstract

Objective: To identify potentially inappropriate prescriptions in older adults treated at the Policlinica Medicos sin Fronteras in Huancayo polyclinic during 2023. Material and Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, and retrospective study carried out on 247 older adults treated at the Policlinica Medicos sin Fronteras in Huancayo during 2023. Sociodemographic, geriatric, and pharmacological variables were analyzed using the STOPP/START criteria. Results: The evaluation identified 708 inappropriate prescriptions (STOPP) and 145 inappropriate prescriptions (START). The medication indication section accounted for 16.1% of the inappropriate STOPP prescriptions and 38.6% of the inappropriate START prescriptions. Polypharmacy was present in 69.6% of the elderly patients, showing a statistically significant association with inappropriate prescribing (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Inappropriate prescribing was prevalent in more than half of the patients, with the STOPP-START criteria being the fundamental tool for its detection.
