Body mass index and hemoglobin levels in adolescents from an educational institution in the province of Huancayo 2025

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and hemoglobin levels in adolescents from an educational institution in the province of Huancayo in 2025. Material and Methods: A quantitative study with a non-experimental, cross-sectional design and a descriptive-correlational scope was conducted. The population consisted of 90 adolescents from an educational institution in the province of Huancayo. Data collection was carried out through structured observation and direct measurement using a calibrated scale, a stadiometer, and a hemoglobinometer. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the relationship between the variables. Results: Body mass index (BMI) showed a mean of 18.9 kg/m² (SD = 2.5), with 70% of adolescents classified within the normal range, while 10% were underweight and 20% were overweight or obese. Regarding hemoglobin levels, the mean value was 12.99 g/dL (SD = 1.1); 68.9% of participants had normal hemoglobin levels, 20.0% had mild anemia, and 11.1% had moderate anemia. Correlation analysis revealed a weak positive association between BMI and hemoglobin levels (r = 0.18; p = 0.09). Conclusions: No statistically significant relationship was found between body mass index and hemoglobin levels among the adolescents evaluated.
